In the 2019 election 98 women were elected - 10 more than in the previous federal election in 2015. 71% of MPs are still men. According to analysis by CBC after the 2019 election, 596 women ran for a major party and 97 of them were elected, compared to 830 men running with 240 elected. In other words, for every 100 women who ran, 16 won, while for every 100 men who ran, 29 won. And out of all the candidates for all major parties, about 15 per cent of candidates for the country’s six major parties were visible minorities, according to an analysis of candidate lists by The Canadian Press. While an increase of about 1% from the 2015 election, it is not representative of the 22% of Canadians who are visible minorities and that doesn't even include Indigenous peoples.
